When Your Instagram Gets Hacked: My Experience & the Frustration of Trying to Reach Meta

Picture of snow on a mountain

you’ve ever had your Instagram hacked, you know how gut-wrenching it feels. One moment, everything you’ve worked for is right there — your photos, your community, your memories — and the next, you’re suddenly locked out, watching helplessly as someone else takes over.

That’s exactly what happened to me.

Losing My Account While I Was Still Building It

I’ve only been doing photography since March, but in that short time I poured everything into building my Instagram — posting regularly, connecting with clients, sharing my work, and growing my little community. My page wasn’t just a collection of photos; it was my portfolio, my brand, and a reflection of how far I’ve come in such a short time.

When my account was hacked, it all disappeared in hours. I kept getting kicked off again and again — every time I tried to reset the password or remove the hacker, they somehow got back in faster than I could react. It was like watching my account slip through my fingers in real time.

They changed the email, added their own accounts, and deleted everything I had worked for. It felt awful.

The Frustration of Trying to Reach Meta

What made things even worse was realizing how hard it is to get actual help from Meta (the company behind Instagram and Facebook).

There’s no phone number, no real support email, and no quick way to talk to a human being. I went through every recovery form I could find, uploaded my ID multiple times, and tried every security step possible. Each time, I’d get automated replies or links to the same help articles I’d already read ten times.

At one point, it said my account didn’t exist — even though I could still see it online, now under a completely different name. It honestly feels impossible to reach someone who can actually fix it.

Starting Over From Scratch

Eventually, I had to accept that my old account was gone. I started fresh with a new one — @jendolanphoto — and began rebuilding from zero.

It’s disheartening, especially when you’re just starting out and still finding your footing in photography. But I’m reminding myself that what truly matters isn’t a number on a screen — it’s the passion behind the work and the people who support it. Every new follower, like, and message means even more now because I know how quickly it can all be taken away.

What I’ve Learned

If there’s one thing I want other creators and small business owners to know, it’s this: protect your account early.

Here’s what I wish I’d done sooner:

  • Turn on two-factor authentication (and don’t rely only on text codes — use an authenticator app).

  • Regularly check your login activity and remove unknown devices.

  • Download a copy of your data every few months.

  • Don’t ignore suspicious DMs or collaboration requests that ask you to log in somewhere else.

Even though this whole situation has been discouraging, it’s also been a reminder that I’m stronger than I thought. I built my first account from nothing once — and I can do it again.

If you’ve been hacked too, you’re not alone. And if you ever see one of your favorite creators suddenly disappear or restart, know that behind that new page might be someone just trying to rebuild what they lost.

📸 How to Get a Photography Permit in Banff National Park

Husband and wife kissing by Policemans boardwalk Canmore, Alberta

Everything you need to know before planning your Banff elopement or photo session. If you’re dreaming of saying “I do” surrounded by turquoise lakes and mountain peaks, you’re not alone — Banff is one of the most breathtaking places in Canada to elope or have your photos taken. But before you grab your bouquet and hike into the mountains, there’s one important step to know: you need a Parks Canada photography permit for any professional or commercial photo session inside Banff National Park.

Don’t worry — the process is simpler than it sounds! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get everything in place so your Banff elopement or photo session goes smoothly.

🌲 Step 1: Understand When a Permit Is NeededIf your photoshoot is personal (like taking selfies or family snapshots), you don’t need a permit. But if you’re hiring a professional photographer, or the images will be used for business, advertising, or a paid service — that’s considered commercial photography by Parks Canada. That means you’ll need a Commercial Film & Photography Permit. This applies to:Elopements and weddings with a professional photographerEngagement or family sessions by a paid photographerBranding or promotional shoots

🗂️ Step 2: Contact Parks CanadaYou’ll need to apply directly through Banff National Park’s Film & Photography Office. Here’s how:📧 Email: banff.film@pc.gc.ca 📞 Phone: 403-762-1428 💻 Website: Banff National Park Film & Photography PermitsThey’re usually very friendly and used to working with photographers and elopement planners. It’s best to reach out at least 10 business days before your shoot (earlier for large productions).

🧾 Step 3: Fill Out the Application FormWhen you email the Film Office, they’ll send you a short application form asking for:The date and time of your sessionExact locations (you can list a few — like Two Jack Lake, Moraine Lake, or Tunnel Mountain)The size of your group (clients + photographer + any assistants or vendors)A short description of your session (elopement, couple session, branding, etc.)They use this info to make sure your shoot doesn’t interfere with wildlife, traffic, or park operations.

💵 Step 4: Pay the Permit FeeAs of 2025, most small elopements or portrait sessions fall under the Low-Impact Commercial Photographycategory. Fees can vary, but are generally around:$250–$300 per day for a small photo session or elopementAdditional location or monitoring fees may apply for larger shoots or sensitive areasOnce your application is approved, you’ll receive an invoice by email. Payment is made directly to Parks Canada (usually by credit card).

📜 Step 5: Carry Your Permit During the ShootOnce your permit is approved, you’ll receive a PDF copy — make sure to:Save it on your phone and print a copyKeep it with you during the shootRespect all guidelines (stay on trails, avoid wildlife disruption, no drones unless approved)Parks staff sometimes do random checks — especially at popular spots like Moraine Lake or Lake Louise — so having your permit handy keeps everything smooth and stress-free.

💡 Step 6: Choose a Photographer Who’s Familiar With Banff RulesWorking with a photographer who knows the ins and outs of Banff permits makes the process effortless. I’ve gone through this process many times and can guide my couples through locations that photograph beautifully and comply with Parks Canada’s requirements.

Whether you’re eloping at Moraine Lake, celebrating love at Two Jack Lake, or hiking up Tunnel Mountain for golden-hour portraits — I’ll handle the permit logistics with you so you can focus on the magic of your day.

🏔️ Pro Tips for a Stress-Free Banff Session✔️ Apply early — permits can take up to 10 business days ✔️ Avoid long weekends and peak tourist hours for easier parking ✔️ Respect park rules (no confetti, no drones, no off-trail walking) ✔️ Have a backup location in case of closures or weather ✔️

Bring your Park Pass — everyone entering Banff National Park needs one💍 Ready to Plan Your Banff Elopement?Banff and the Canadian Rockies are full of stunning backdrops — from Lake Minnewanka to Vermilion Lakes, and secret little spots tucked away from the crowds. If you’re ready to start planning your elopement or photo session, I’ll help guide you through the entire process — permits included.

Hidden Gems & Photo Spots Around Canmore, Alberta

Engaged couple go walking along quarry lake by the three sisters in Canmore, Alberta

Nestled in the heart of the Rockies, Canmore is a dream location for couples, families, and adventurers who want their love story captured against dramatic peaks, winding rivers, and golden meadows. While spots like Lake Louise and Moraine Lake get all the attention, Canmore itself has countless breathtaking locations that feel more intimate and less crowded — perfect for creating timeless, candid photographs. Here are some of my favorite hidden gems and photo-worthy spots around Canmore.

1. Policeman’s Creek BoardwalkOne of Canmore’s best-kept secrets, this peaceful boardwalk winds through wetlands with the Three Sisters mountains perfectly reflected in the water on calm days. It’s ideal for sunrise or golden hour, and gives you that magical “mountain reflection” look without the tourist crowds.Pro tip: Wear shoes you can walk in — the trail is easy but stretches out, and it’s nice to explore a few different angles.

2. Quarry Lake ParkA local favorite for both swimming and photos, Quarry Lake has mountain views, open fields, and forest trails all in one place. Whether you’re envisioning a romantic stroll by the water or playful family shots in the meadow, it offers variety in just a short walk.Pro tip: Summer weekends can be busy — for an intimate vibe, schedule early morning or weekday sessions.

3. Grassi LakesWith turquoise waters tucked beneath limestone cliffs, Grassi Lakes feels like a slice of the Rockies without the full-day hike. The short but rewarding trail makes it accessible, and the colors are stunning year-round.Pro tip: The lower trail is easier for families and formal outfits, while the upper trail gives more dramatic views.

4. The Engine BridgeThis rustic red truss bridge is a Canmore icon but still feels like a hidden spot compared to Banff landmarks. It gives a mix of history, charm, and sweeping mountain backdrops. It’s especially beautiful at golden hour, with soft light filtering through the trees and mountains behind.

5. Rundle Forebay ReservoirJust off Spray Lakes Road, this reservoir is often overlooked. The wide-open water mirrors the mountains, and the nearby forest trails create a perfect balance of dramatic and intimate backdrops.Pro tip: This spot is beautiful in every season, from wildflowers in summer to snowy peaks in winter.

6. Canmore Nordic Centre TrailsThe Nordic Centre offers winding forest paths, mountain meadows, and ridge views — all close to town. It’s perfect for couples wanting a woodsy, adventure-inspired session that still feels private.

7. Spray Lakes Road (Smith-Dorrien Trail)If you’re up for a short drive, this road leading into Kananaskis Country is packed with jaw-dropping pullouts. Think wide-open mountain ranges, crystal-clear lakes, and endless forest views.Pro tip: Great for couples who want those epic, adventurous “on top of the world” vibes. Bring warm layers — the temperature drops quickly up here.

8. Local Hidden CornersSometimes the best photos come from simply wandering downtown Canmore — quiet side streets, murals, coffee shop patios, and cozy stone walls all add variety to your gallery. Pairing a mountain spot with some in-town lifestyle shots makes for a fun storytelling session.Closing ThoughtsFrom quiet lakeside moments to adventurous mountain overlooks, Canmore is filled with hidden gems waiting to be explored. Whether you’re planning your wedding, engagement session, or a “just because” couples shoot, these spots capture the authentic beauty of the Rockies while keeping things intimate and true to you.

✨ Tip for couples: Some areas around Canmore do require photography permits, especially in public parks or conservation lands. I guide all my clients through this process so you can relax and focus on enjoying your session.

Canon Creator Event Experience

Discover my experience at the Canon Creator Event in Calgary — from stepping out of my comfort zone to capturing bold, creative portraits

Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone: My Experience at the Canon Creator Event

Last weekend, I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Canon Creator Event in Calgary, hosted by Socality and The Camera Store. This event brought together photographers, creators, and visionaries from across Alberta to collaborate, connect, and create.

As someone who usually focuses on photographing couples and families, stepping into a space filled with styled models, creative setups, and a room buzzing with energy was definitely outside my comfort zone. But sometimes, that’s exactly where growth happens.

Creative Energy Everywhere

From the moment I walked in, I was surrounded by inspiration. The stylists and creative team—@ashnstyling, @jazminnunezg._, @chanpearson, @makbutonline and @liamasa—brought incredible vision and detail to the styled looks. Every corner offered a new scene, a new vibe, and a fresh opportunity to capture something different from my usual work.

It was such a refreshing challenge to direct models, play with different lighting setups, and experiment with posing in ways I don’t often get to do. I left feeling re-energized and more excited than ever to push my creativity further.

Collaboration Over Competition

One of my favorite parts of the event was the sense of community. Photographers of all levels came together—not to compete, but to collaborate, share ideas, and celebrate the art of photography. It reminded me why I first picked up a camera: to connect with people and tell stories through images.

What I Took Away

Leaving the event, I felt inspired to create more, to experiment with new techniques, and to keep pushing myself outside of the familiar. This experience reminded me that growth comes from trying new things—even if it feels a little intimidating at first.

I’m so grateful to Canon Canada, Socality, and The Camera Store for putting together such a powerful and creative space. I can’t wait to take what I learned and carry it into my upcoming shoots with couples, families, and beyond.

Why I fell in love with photography...

Couple kissing passionately at NoseCreek in Airdrie, Alberta

There’s something magical about freezing a moment in time—a sunset dipping below the horizon, my boys giggling in the backyard, golden light filtering through the trees on a quiet evening hike. Photography has become more than a creative hobby for me. It’s a source of joy, a breath of fresh air, and a way to reconnect with myself.

As a mom of two young boys, my days are full—full of laughter, cuddles, chaos, and everything in between. And while I love being their mom more than anything, photography has given me something that's just mine. It gets me out of the house. It pushes me to explore, to chase light, and to look at the world a little differently.

There are times when I’ll pull over just to capture a sunset, or lace up my shoes and head out for a hike with my camera in hand. In those quiet moments, I’m reminded of who I am beyond the routines and responsibilities. Photography gives me purpose—it invites me to slow down, to notice the little things, and to create something beautiful from the everyday.

The joy I get from clicking the shutter and seeing a story come to life in a single image—that’s what keeps me coming back. Whether it's documenting my family or capturing moments for others, photography fills my heart in a way that’s hard to put into words. It’s more than pictures. It’s presence. It’s peace. It’s purpose.

If you’re looking for someone to capture your family, your love, or just a special moment in time—I’d be honoured to help. Let’s create something beautiful together. [Contact me here] or follow along on Instagram @jendolanphotographyto see more of the moments that inspire me.

Why I Switched My Website Platform (And What That Means for You)

A fun photo of a kid

Hey friends! 👋

If you’ve been following along on my journey, you might have noticed something a little different around here… Jen Dolan Photography got a brand new website!

After some late nights (and probably too many iced coffees), I made the switch from Pixieset to Squarespace—and I couldn’t be more excited. I wanted to share a little behind-the-scenes on why I made the change, what’s new, and how it’s going to make your experience even better.

Why I Made the Switch

As much as I loved Pixieset for galleries (and still use it to deliver your final photos!), I felt a bit limited when it came to customizing my website. I wanted something that was more me—modern, clean, and easy to update. I needed more control over SEO, layout options, and the ability to add blog posts just like this one.

Squarespace checked all the boxes.

It gives me more freedom to grow my site alongside my business, especially as I add new services like weddings, couples sessions, and sports teams 📸⚽️💍

What’s New

✨ A fresh, modern look
✨ Mobile-friendly design (so easy to scroll on your phone!)
✨ Faster updates, so my latest work and pricing is always current
✨ A brand new blog where I can share sneak peeks, tips, and session recaps
✨ Better SEO tools to help more amazing clients (like you!) find me online

What This Means for You

Booking and browsing just got easier! Whether you're checking out session info, viewing my portfolio, or reaching out to book, everything’s more seamless. And as I continue to grow my business, I’ll be updating the site regularly with new galleries, blog posts, and behind-the-scenes fun.

Thank you for being here and supporting me as I take these next steps. Your encouragement and love mean the world to me. I truly wouldn’t be here without you 💛

Now go take a peek around and let me know what you think of the new space: www.jendolanphotography.ca
